Beacon is a youth ministry founded in the Florida District to provide community building, spirituality, learning, social action, youth empowerment, and leadership. The organization serves youth from 12 to 20, an age range that allows younger teens to learn and develop leadership skills while allowing older teens to mentor younger youth. Advisors receive special training to work with youth and accompany them to on field trips.
At UUCM, Beacons meets on Sundays during the Religious Education time for fellowship and exploration. In addition, the teens meet one Friday a month for Popcorn Theology when we watch fun and challenging movies. We share pizza beforehand and discuss the movie's implications and connections to Unitarian Universalism afterward.
Several times a year we travel to other UU churches in the Florida district for CONS, youth-run conferences of like-minded young Unitarian Universalists. Cons run from Friday nights through Sunday mornings and include games, workshops, music, and spiritual worship services. Cons are a special time for young people to share friendship, fellowship, and our UU faith.
